Post-Brexit UK passports - seen by Brexiteers as a symbol of the UK's perceived independence from Brussels might be made in Europe.

Two mainland European companies, one French and one German, are competing with the quirkily French named British firm De La Rue for the 500m contract.

Eurosceptics had complained about the identical, burgundy passport used by all EU member states since the 1980s.

They argued Brexit should allow a return to the older style of British passport with the navy blue background.

Brexit-backing MPs are reported to be 'seeing red' at the possibility the contract may be won by a company based in the EU.
