Beam me up Christine! (true story - really!)
1992. Olivetti golfball typewriter, 120 gsm Basildon Bond, Wove, printed header paper, carbon copy.
“Fax this through to GEC for me please Christine.” Handing our new girl the top copy of our typed
customer quotation. “They’ve asked to see it as soon as possible but put this original in the
post anyway as well please.”
Christine first walked over to the Xerox photocopier and proceeded to make a copy.
“Why did you take another copy?” I asked. “Don’t we already have a carbon?”
“Yes, but I didn’t want to fax the original.” Christine replied.
“Why not?” I asked. “It’s not likely to get marked or damaged.”
“Because it’s on that very expensive nice headed paper and I don’t want to waste money faxing that.” she responded.
I thought one day I’d explain to Christine what the future might hold for all of us with such scientific wonders as the Hadron Collider at CERN on the French-Swiss border. Particularly once they've figured out how to reduce its current seventeen mile circumference down to something about the size of a fax machine. The possibilities could be endless.
In the meantime I simply poured myself a glass of water and fetched an Aspirin. Then asked her if she’d be so kind as to refill the photocopier with paper. Cheap paper.
I’ve finished teleporting now.
