An article was published recently by some Councils in Scotland along with a few others below the border, demanding that all paper labels be removed from glass bottles and containers and also tin cans before disposal in your waste bins. Otherwise bin men will not empty your bins.
Quite how you are expected to remove the labels isn't explained. Most adhesives are petroleum based and thus water resistant. Using a petroleum based solvent might, heaven forbid, add to Global Warming and anyway hazardous. Also, what are you expected to do with the labels once removed? Obviously can't go in the same bin. Otherwise ridiculous. Maybe gnaw the labels off with your teeth and then eat them?
Minimum melting temperatures of glass and steel are 1,400°C and 1,450°C respectively.
We have a sneaky feeling recovery smelting furnaces would burn off any paper labels, having a maximum ignition temperature of just 246°C. Also landfill sites won't be particularly upset whether there are any labels or not.
However it is essential that all booze bottles, especially Single Malt Whisky bottles, are respectfully arranged with the necks pointing East. As with churches. Otherwise you might not go to Heaven.
Do jobsworths actually get paid to come up with such bullshit proposals?
No wonder Council taxes are so high!
