Key Symbols and their meanings

food_safe_symbol.gif Food Safe Symbol: Should display a knife and fork or a fork and wine glass icon. The symbol indicates that the plastic material is safe for direct contact with food. It means the container has been tested and approved by laboratories to ensure it does not leach toxic chemicals into food.

BPA Free: This label indicates that the plastic does not contain Bisphenol. A chemical linked to health concerns. Look for this label to ensure safer food storage options.

microwave_oven_safe.gif Microwave Safe Symbol: This symbol resembles a microwave oven and indicates that the container can safely be used in a microwave oven without melting or releasing harmful substances.

freezer_safe.gif Freezer Safe Symbol: Represented by a snowflake this symbol indicates that the plastic can withstand freezing temperatures without becoming brittle or cracking.


Recycling Codes and Food Safety

Plastic food containers should display recycling codes numbered 1 to 7 that indicate their type and safety for food use.

food_safe_plastic_1.gif PET or PETE: Commonly used for water and carbonated drinks bottles. Generally safe for single use but not recommended for re-use due to potential leaching if heated.

food_safe_plastic_2.gif HDPE: Used for milk jugs and detergent bottles. Considered safe and can be reused.
